Played some Poker today. Small limits at FTP and Stars. Cash games on FTP, where I have been running warm, and a SNG on Stars. It is funny, I won 2 Buy-ins at the 25NL table, just to lose a shove at the 10NL table. What a tough position I put myself in. I catch a suited AQ in the BB and re-reaise the button, however I get 3-betted by the UTG caller. WTF! Well I call his raise OOP. Flop comes Qd, 9h, 3h. I sit with TPTK and the nut flush draw. What to do? I figure the limp/raiser had a very strong hand, AA or KK at least, and maybe AKo. I figure I have so many outs that it is a race. I know the villain isn't going anywhere, no matter what! Well here goes...I shove it in the middle and the expected call happens. He shows me two red Kings, and I show him the monster draw. Well much to my surprise I see a red turn and river, but no hearts or Queens. Darn. I am not too upset because I think I played it right, however, IT SUCKS!
I really hate losing. I hate losing at anything, golf, poker darts, trivia and anything else that is competitive. That actually might be a problem in my game. I don't think I tilt, but I may. When I play a hand well, and get sucked out on, I really get pissed. I do my level best to keep my mouth shut, but IT SUCKS! I really get mad if I play a hand poorly. I played yesterday and called a pair of 8's to the river with a 9n on the board. I even called the villains shove when the second 9 hit the board. WTF, I guess because the villain was in the BB and checked his Q9o, I thought I was holding the nuts? When I have a lack of discipline, like that hand, I stew all day, I mean for hours. I don't play and sit and kick myself in the ass for hours. I guess it goes back to losing. If I get beat, I mean outright beaten, mano y mano, and I do all that I could to win, then that is one thing. If I allow someone to win by my poor performance, then I go off. I hate it, in fact, I am pissed just typing this. POKER!

Well what a weekend. OVERTIME! Us prison guards love to put in the extra work. The pay structure for a CA prison guard is somewhat salaried. We receive a monthly check based on 22 days of work, and that is broken down into an hourly rate. Due to the very liberal leave structure, we always make the numbers, so you are generally guaranteed to make your actual salary. It is pretty simple, but on those occasions, and there are plenty, when overtime is available, that salary converts to an hourly wage and at time and one-half. So for me, that is a number just north of $70.00 per hour. Well I was able to muster up the strength to make a weekend of 24 hours of regular shift and 20.5 hours of overtime.
So it looks like this, Friday, 5 hours sleep and 12.5 hours of work, Saturday, 4 hours of sleep 16 hours work, Sunday 4 hours of sleep 16 hours of work. Grand Total: 13 hours of sleep and 48.5 hours of work. This kind of activity is good for the bankroll.
I did get a little ass chewing on Friday. You see, prisons are a secret place. Not a lot of information creeps into the public, nor to the people who are tasked with oversight responsibilities. We keep our business in house. Well, like a dummy, I went and made a telephone call to HQ. The call was regarding a memorandum that was sent from HQ. There was a difference of opinion in regards to the intent of the memorandum, and since it did say, “ If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Ms. ***** ******* at (916) XXX-XXXX. Well, how dare I! It was not 20 minutes after I hung up the telephone that I was approached by my superior (Captain), and given the warden’s expectations about calling outside the prison. So after I was threatened with death and told, “I ought to F&*%&^* kill you”, I was then told (in a calm voice) I had a right to call, “But what the F%$#@ are you doing…” I was laughing so hard, however the boss wasn’t. Let me see now. If I have any questions or concerns, feel free to call, but you had better not ever call. You see, the call to the warden came from HQ! What a joke! Only true crime to report” Alleged Sexual Battery (Rape) between cellmates. PRISON!
I finally purchased Doyle Brunson’s Book, Super/System 1. I have enjoyed my study time with it. I see what all the hoopla is about. I bet when this book first came out it was golden to many players. I see how his aggression works, and works well. The trouble is, I play at much lower stakes. These moves would be crazy to use. Every shove would get called. I can’t see how this would work at my levels; however there is enough information in the book to be helpful.
I see Doyle’s Room is shutting down. What a shame. It may be that I connected with the online poker scene a little late. The US government might succeed in pushing a lot of players out of the online scene as funding is going to be tough. Stars has the right idea, they accept Money Orders. That is a funding source that will work 100% of the time, no matter what. The only problem is, only true players will use MO’s, and the fish would have swum away. I see tough games ahead at all levels. I also see a whole community of very good poker payers emerging from this, however if poker is allowed, then BOOM!!!

Morning -
Well it is my Monday at the pen. True to the prison guards way, I will be studing my Super System 1 book I just picked up. A little late to read in my poker career of 18 months, but I am going to give it a good looking at. I am awaking to another all day episode of the Anna Nicole Smith custody hearing. I will admit I am a news junkie, but really, this is too much. I cannot believe the Fox News channel is covering this case like it is the 9/11 event. I will say this, If I am in trouble, I guess I would want an @$$hole lawyer like the one's I see in this case. What a joke! These people act like idiots, I mean if I was playing poker with them, something would have to give. I guess everyone has the possible $500 million in their best interest, oh yea, by the way, it does cone with a little girl. If we lose online poker, and I am forced to watch this kind of crap on TV, I think I may just jump off a bridge. As a side note, past my motorcycle exam! Funny how a 44 year can get so excited about passing a 25 question test.

Saw the film "Breech" this evening. A very good movie about the espinoge of Richard Hanssen. Criminals seem to come in every shape and size. From Richard Ramirez to Scott Peterson, it seems you can't put your finger on a specific type of person to commit a crime. Richard Hanssen sold our secrets, as easily as he stole the Russians. It seems if the price is right or the situation is desperate, than anyone will do anything they believe benefits them. Similar to the game I play, Poker. If the price is right, and the odds call for, then we jump in for our own personal gain. It seems the majority of criminals that I deal with on a day to day basis as arrived by doing something, or taking something they felt would benefit them. There are exceptions, specifically with the women, who actually took the "beef" to save thier man. Actually when you think of it, they did so for personal gain, to keep thier man. In reality, the man ends of shacking up, and the girl is left in the dust. Crime and Poker are selfish sports. PRISON!

I am steaming now. Played a session on Stars and lost a half a buy-in. Half a buy-in because one table is good and the other, the other was too much. As a Cardrunners member I have learned to raise all pocket pairs. But what I find playing low limits, raises are not respected. I'll raise 77 in middle position, you know the standard 4X raise, and man it's is an invitation to jump in the pool. When the flop is AK3, now what, C-Bet into the pool, no way! So why raise the middle pairs? If they hit 1 in 7 hands, is there a +EV? I mean if you raise and hit the middle pair set, then any broadway cards on the board are likely to be held, or at least respect will be given the lead out bet and folds are likely. One in seven doesn't make up for the folds when the set is not made, and therefore, do you really make up the money lost in the six raises that didn't hit? Let's say you raise 4X at a 10NL table. Then you would have bet $2.40 over six hands with middle and lower pairs. Can you expect to recoup the $2.40 in the one hand you do hit? What about a re-raise? See it is tough. This leads me to tonights session where I drop 2 buy-ins at the table. You see, I had several middle pairs, 77 (twice), 99, JJ, 10/10, 88, all of which did not hit sets, and in fact lost to overpairs that were also pocket pairs in the hands of the villians. I mean really, is that just nuts or what! POKER!

Morning -
Woke up to read the Cardrunners post response on my hand. Good to see it was a "cooler" and not a donk play. I really want to improve and move up in limits, however I know to do that I need to make good plays. A villian flopping a full house against my top set with A kicker is going to be costly. I should have posted another hand from the same table where my QQ raise was called by an out of position player with his A6 offsuit. The villian called my C-Bet with blanks and caught his A on the turn. Sometimes you can't get anyone of a hand. POKER!
Evening -
While I was sitting in my office, it occurred to me the skills required in poker are similar to the skills I need in my day to day dealings with convicts. You see I am an administrative judge. I conduct hearings to determine guilt or innocence on hundreds of individuals a year. I conduct hearing ranging from murder to rape, stealing butter to illegal sexual acts. I also conduct hundreds of interviews with “professional” liars. Many of these individuals have lied for an entire lifetime, and couple that with the manipulation attempts of a female to a male; I have seen the best “stone cold bluffers” in the world. My “reads” on inmates seem easier than my reads at the poker table. I don’t know why, but when you think about it, they require the same skills. When an inmate is brought into my office, let’s say as a suspect in a battery, I “size” her up. I look her over to get a feel for her behavior. Is she covered in tattoos, boyish, tough, articulate, loud, soft, weak, are her arms folded or is she standing or sitting comfortable, does she look me in the eye or is she continually looking down. Does this inmate possess the necessary skill to attack someone, is she predator or prey, and many more factor are considered when I first say a word. I have never thought of taking this approach at the tables. When you think about it, the game of poker is really about perception. A perception generated by an opponent, to influence the decision making of another. Like the convict attempting to convince me that the slash on her face was not caused by the inmate accusing her of rape with a hot curling iron (true story), however the result of a careless act as she exited her metal bunk bed. I have to determine if she is bluffing, or if she has the goods and telling the truth. So I guess the next live event I am at, I will look at the “convicts” at my table, size them up and stay away from the one with the really curly hair. PRISON!

Tough day in the pen. Several cat fights and one combo lock to the forehead. Man, a black on mexican fight. Should be some payback, but not the girls. It was a drunken fight night on the C Facility, but hey, I was not in the mix. I just put up with the new @##hole boss. PRISON!
Luckly poker at home on stars. Low limit, but maybe someday!!!!!! Third hand...my AQ suited is raised 4X with 2 callers. I am in MP, but we can C-Bet the flop and maybe take it away. WTF! QQ7 on the flop! Away we go. I won't slow play as the 2 clubs show some hope for the flush chasers. Let's see...at the 10NL limit, the pot has $1.40, say $1.20 should work. One fold and one call, great a player and I have postion. Hmmmmm, maybe KQ clubs, yes, KQ of clubs on the draw. Turns shows a nice 9h, no big. BB bets out a sawbuck into a $3.60 pot, well we'll see this bet and raise...Hmmmmmm, $3.30. WTF! a re-raise to $5.70! Now what! That leaves this villians with 2.40, well here we go, I am putting him ALL-IN!
When the dust settles... his pocket sticks make an handsome 777QQ, which is a bit stronger than my QQQA. Now I know what a lock feels like to the head. POKER!
